Subject: Consortium Led by Sacyr Vallehermoso Given Best Score for Panama Canal Expansion


Panama, 8 July 2009. Grupo Unidos por el Canal, led by Sacyr Vallehermoso (which includes Somague Engenharia), Impregilo (Italy), Jan de Nul (Belgium) and Constructora Urbana (Panama), has the best value offer for the contract for the design and construction of the third set of floodgates, the main component in the expansion, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced today. The Grupo Unidos por el Canal consortium obtained the best combined score for technical proposals and price. According to the ACP announcement, the contract will be awarded in the next few days. The project related to the third set of floodgates is part of the overall programme to expand the Canal’s capacity. The three main components are: construction of two floodgates complexes – one in the Atlantic and another in the Pacific – each with three levels, which include basins for the reuse of water; digging of access channels to the new floodgates and widening of the existing navigation channels, and also increasing the depth of the navigation channels and the height of the maximum level of operation of the Gatun lake.
